Product is a lot more than an idea on a napkin and a team of engineers. Great product work is sees the market, clearly articulates the vision, defines the competitive advantage, aligns functions, leads (great) design, understands development and engineering and knows how to deliver. You need a CMO who is the champion of user experience. One that works closely with product to ensure great communication, that processes are aligned across the company and that everyone is making decision using the same metrics. A CMO’s role is product goes well beyond writing a good story. In a smaller startup, marketing and product are the same thing.
